Jack Petchey Award – May 2012 Nominations
Following this year’s earlier awards for Chris Hall and Mollie O’Sullivan, we have six (!) nominations for the Jack Petchey Achievement Award in May:
Sophie Dimbleby
Sophie has been one of our top U13 girls in a variety of events in the past two years. Certainly her greatest success so far, besides the hurdles silver medal, was her javelin gold medal in the recent Surrey County Champ. With her winning throw she furthermore set a new U13 Club record. Her superb ranking in the top 10 nationally is testimony to her focus and her commitment to training.
James is an U17 T33 wheelchair racer who has worked really hard this winter to improve his times across all distances. As a result he improved his 100m time by >3 seconds, his 200m time by >2 seconds, and his 400m time by >13 seconds this year. But perhaps his greatest achievement to date is his time in Aprils Virgin London Mini Marathon which was 23:42; he managed to take off almost 6mins from his time in 2011. James has also started to work in the gym to help strengthen his body, impressing the other gym users by his work ethic and ability to lift weights which seem out of reach for his size.
Three medals at the Surrey County Champs, including the U13 high jump title, demonstrate Rhianna’s remarkable success in her first full track & field season. She is showing huge enthusiasm in training and competition and has been a major contributor in the junior league matches this season, most recently at the Lily B match where she achieved new PB’s in all three individual events. Her high jump of 1.35 puts her at the top of the Surrey rankings.
Though Amy is only just into her first track and field season with the Club, she has already made her mark in both the National YAL and the County Championships. She is unbeaten in those 3 Under 13 Long Jump competitions, winning the NYAL matches at Kingston & Linford Christie, and, most competitively, heading a large field in the Surrey Champs at Kingsmeadow, and peppering the 4m20 mark on each occasion. In the sprints in the NYAL, she has run her opponents hard in tight finishes, narrowly losing twice to the same AFD girl at the Linford Christie NYAL fixture over 75/150m, and reaching the 200m Final at the Surreys.
Exemplary commitment to training and competition is paying off as Neil has improved his 800m time consistently week by week, now already by 6 seconds compared with last year. He achieved an excellent 5th place at the County Champs Final and won the 800m in the last UK YAL match in great style. Equally at home in cross country as on the track, Neil also won 3rd place in the Downs League in his first season as U15.

A very difficult choice indeed. Please send me your votes by Saturday 9 June. As always, I am also looking for ideas (particularly from our young athletes!) how to make use of the award money (£200 per award) for the benefit of our young members.
